WINNER of the Thelonious Monk Competition 2013

This edition of the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition could be watched streamed live from Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower Theater in Washington. Every year there is a focus on a different instrument, this year was the 26-th edition of this contest.
In this Sunday’s semifinals, the saxophonists Melissa Aldana (Santiago, Chile), Andrew Gould (Long Island, New York), Michael Griffin (Sydney, Australia), Danny Janklow (Los Angeles, California), Mike Lebrun (Framingham, Massachusetts), Braxton Cook (Silver Spring, Maryland), Sam Dillon (Great Neck, New York), Dean Tsur (Timrat, Israel), Ben Van Gelder (Groningen, The Netherlands), Lukas Gabric (Villach, Austria), Godwin Louis (Harlem, New York), Tivon Pennicott (Marietta, Georgia) and Clay Pritchard (Grapevine, Texas) had to perform 3 tunes, among which a Monk composition.
After this round the finalists were chosen: Melissa Aldana, 24, Tivon Pennicott, 27, and Godwin Louis, 28, currently New York-based.
Melissa Aldana won in Monday night’s finals performing “I Thought About You” (by Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Mercer) and her own composition “Free Fall”. The rhythm section included the bassist Rodney Whitaker, the pianist Reginald Thomas, and the drummer Carl Allen. The competition’s jury had as members the saxophonists Jane Ira Bloom, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Watson, Jimmy Heath and Branford Marsalis .
Second and third place were won by Tivon Pennicott and Godwin Louis.
Melissa won a $25,000 scholarship with the Monk Institute, and a recording contract with Concord Music Group.

Locul al doilea și al treilea au fost câștigate de Tivon Pennicott și Godwin Louis.
Melissa a câstigat o bursa de 25.000 de dolari din partea Monk Institute, și un contract de înregistrari cu Concord Music Group.
