Duke

Îmi amintesc când, în liceu fiind, Joe Zawinul a părăsit grupul lui Cannonball Adderley pentru a începe o colaborare cu Wayne Shorter pe care ei o numeau Weather Report… și a fost înlocuit de un tip de care nu auzisem niciodată pe nume George Duke. „Ei bine, asta o să fie nasol rău” mi-am zis… a urmat o re-adorare personală a muzicii lui  Cannonball (chiar cu câteva luni înainte de moartea sa) și asta datorită unei noi abordări oferite aproape în totalitate de Duke.
Acea peridoadă cu Cannonball a mers în paralel cu Zappa, și ah! ce ani extraordinari au fost ăia… urmați de sesiunile de fusion și funk (colaborări cu Miles, cu emblematicul Crosswinds a lui Billy Cobham) el a devenit o savoare unică pentru toți acei artiști hip-hop care au urmat și care vroiau ceva autentic și old school,  în același timp el s-a aflat în spatele unora dintre cele mai mari nume din producțiile de studio… Michael Jackson printre multe altele.
În anii ce au urmat, s-a întors mai mult înspre jazz (deși funk-ul era întotdeauna prezent) iar oamenii l-au îndrăgit în continuare, în timp ce tragediile personale incluzând pierderea soției și lupta sa personală cu leucemia (printre altele) i-au făcut muzica mai profundă și din suflet… dacă se mai poate spune asta.

Ce pierdere imensă… cineva care TUTUROR ne va lipsi… nu doar nouă celor împătimiți.

I remember how back in high school when Joe Zawinul left Cannonball Adderley’s band to start some deal with Wayne Shorter they were calling Weather Report… and he was replaced by a guy I had never heard of named George Duke. „Well this is going to suck,” I said to myself…followed by my personal reacclaimation of Cannonball’s music in the months just before his death, with large credit attributed to a fresh new palette provided almost entirely by Duke.
That Cannonball cycle paralleled the Zappa period, and oh what wonderful years they were…followed by fusion and funk sessions (Miles flirtations among those, alongside Billy Cobham’s landmark Crosswinds) that became a sampler’s delight for all those future hip hop artists who wanted it real but old school, while he backed some of the biggest names in recorded history… Michael Jackson accounting for one of many.
In later years, he returned more to jazz (although the funk was always around) and people fell in with him all over again, while personal tragedies that included the passing of his wife and his own battle with leukemia (if anything) made his playing even more substantive and heartfelt…if indeed that were even possible.

What a huge loss…and someone EVERYONE will miss… not just us hardcores.
